Do I Need An Extension Rod?

Whether you're building a house, replacing an existing fitting, or changing things around, fans are an Australian essential in all dwellings large and small. If you're reading this you're likely asking yourself... "Do I need an extension rod?'". This article is going to clarify that for you and explain when and where you will need to use an extension rod for your new fan.

An extension rod is used to lower the fan so that the blades sit at a certain height above the ground. The most optimal height for a ceiling fan is around 2.1 to 2.7 meters off the floor. So if you are someone who has high ceilings (lucky you), an extension rod might be needed to bring the fan closer to the ground. On a side note, if you are someone who has a shorter ceiling but you still want to install a fan, or you're on the taller side (lucky you), you might want to look at our range of low-profile ceiling fans here.

Another reason you might require an extension rod is if you have a 'sloped' or 'raked' ceiling. A sloped ceiling means that installing a fan without an extension rod would result in the blades crashing into the angled part of the roof. So, by installing an extension rod, you can lower the fan blades for safe clearance!

Can I buy any extension rod?

Short answer: no. Long answer: extension rods aren't just poles, they have a specific set of wires inside with connectors on each side of the rod called a 'loom'. This is why you can't just use a pole, and this is why you need to get the extension rod that is made for that particular model of fan. Extension rods made for AC type fans may not have the right cords or plugs for a DC fan and vise versa.

Choosing a size

Extension rods generally come in two different sizes: 900mm and 1800mm and depending on the drop required, they can be cut to size by your electrician. You should also pay attention to the colour you are choosing to ensure it goes with the fan you have selected.
