Before choosing step lights, it’simportant to think about the installation type, IP rating, colour temperature, materials, and whether you prefer built-in LED or replaceable globe styles.

This depends on your wall type, installation access, and the look you want to achieve. 

Recessed Step Lights 

Recessed step lights sit neatly inside the wall, creating a sleek and streamlined finish. They blend in beautifully and are often preferred for modern designs.
However, recessed fittings may not always be possible in existing homes unless the wall cavity allows it, so it’s best to confirm feasibility before purchasing. 

Surface Mounted Step Lights 

Surface mounted step lights are fixed directly onto the surface, which makes them easier to install and replace over time. They’re especially useful when you want to avoid cutting wall openings — and they reduce the risk of needing to match an exact cut-out size later if the fitting becomes discontinued. 

Tip: Light output is usually similar for both styles — this decision is mostly about installation practicality and aesthetics. 

Both options have their benefits — the best choice depends on your priorities. 

Built-in LED Step Lights 

Many modern step lights come with integrated LED technology. These can offer performance advantages such as: 

• brighter output 
• improved heat management (via built-in heat sinks) 
• longer lifespan 

However, when the LED fails, the entire fitting usually needs replacing, which can create unnecessary waste and may require an electrician. 

Replaceable Bulb Step Lights 

Replaceable bulb step lights allow you to swap a globe when needed instead of replacing the full fitting. This can be: 

• more cost-effective over time 
• more convenient 
• better for long-term maintenance 

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating tells you how well the fitting is sealed against dust and water. 

A good rule of thumb: 

• IP20 = indoor use only 
• IP44 / IP54 = suitable for sheltered outdoor areas 
• IP65 / IP67 = excellent sealing for outdoor weather exposure 

If your step light is IP65 or higher, you can usually feel confident you’re selecting a high-quality outdoor-ready fitting. 

Colour temperature affects both visibility and overall ambience. It’s best to match your step lights to nearby outdoor lighting where possible. 

Warm White (3000K) 

Warm white step lights create a relaxing and welcoming glow, making them ideal for: 

• decks and entertaining areas 
• garden paths 
• outdoor feature lighting

• 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel 
• solid copper 
• brass 

These are far more resistant to corrosion than standard metals.
