They can be effective for spacious patios and open entertaining zones, and may perform well when you want warmth across a broader area. Choosing the right outdoor gas heater depends on the characteristics of your outdoor area and how you plan to use it. There are two main options to consider: freestanding and wall-mounted outdoor gas heaters, each offering unique advantages.

If you prioritise mobility and versatility, a freestanding portable outdoor gas heater is an excellent choice. With this type, you can enjoy the freedom to move it around your outdoor space as needed. This flexibility allows you to position the heater wherever it's most effective and convenient. When warmer months arrive, you can easily store it away until it's needed again. It's worth noting that some models, like the Heatstrip, typically run on LPG gas. 

On the other hand, if you prefer a more permanent heating solution, a wall-mounted outdoor gas heater is worth considering. These heaters are installed in a fixed location and cannot be moved around. However, they offer the advantage of consistent and reliable heat when placed near your regular sitting and dining areas. By mounting the heater on a wall, you can create a designated spot where warmth is readily available, enhancing the comfort of your outdoor space.

Wind has a significant impact on the performance of traditional outdoor heaters compared to infrared heaters. The reason for this is that conventional heaters generate warmth that gets absorbed by the surrounding air molecules and can be easily dispersed by strong winds. On the other hand, infrared patio heaters operate differently by directly warming objects in their path, rather than the air around them. As a result, the presence of wind doesn't interfere with the projection of infrared heat, making the heating process much more efficient.

The durability of a gas bottle relies on its gas consumption rating, and LPG gas bottles (specifically propane gas) are widely used in this regard.

If you have a standalone outdoor gas heater that provides a maximum heat output of 30 MJ/h, you can expect a 9-kilogram liquid propane tank to last approximately 9 hours when set on high.

When equipped with a 9 kg propane gas cylinder, an outdoor gas heater can operate for up to ten hours. For those seeking cost-effectiveness and lower maintenance requirements, natural gas patio heaters are a preferable option over propane patio heaters.
