Pendant lights by ceiling height
Ceiling height should drive your pendant selection as much as style does. In standard 2.4m ceilings, keep pendants compact and avoid long drop cords — the bottom of the fitting should sit at least 210cm from the floor in any walkway. In 2.7m–3m ceilings, you have more flexibility for statement pieces and longer drops, which creates better visual proportion. For double-height voids and stairwells (typically 4–7m), a large-scale single pendant or cascading cluster works best — position it roughly one-third of the way down from the ceiling to fill the vertical space without blocking sightlines from either floor. Long-drop pendants for voids should use LED light sources to minimise maintenance, as bulb changes at height require specialist access.
Sizing pendant lights for your space
Getting the scale right is the most common challenge. As a practical guide: for a 1.5m island bench, two pendants around 20–25cm diameter suit the space well. A 2m island takes two 40cm pendants or three at 30cm. A 3m island can handle two 60cm pendants or three at 40cm. Alternatively, a single linear pendant spanning most of the bench length gives a cleaner, more architectural look — particularly effective in open-plan kitchens where visual clutter competes with other design elements. For dining rooms, the pendant diameter should be roughly half the width of the table, centred above it.
Mixing pendant finishes with your interior
Your pendant finish should anchor to the dominant hardware in the space — cabinetry handles, tapware, and door furniture. Matte black suits contemporary interiors with white or grey palettes and works across the widest range of interior styles. Brushed brass and antique gold suit warmer, earthy tones and timber-heavy interiors. Brushed nickel and chrome read as cooler and suit Hamptons, coastal, and more formal contemporary spaces. Where you want contrast — for example a black pendant in a white kitchen — ensure at least one other element in the room echoes the same finish to avoid it feeling disconnected.
