Extension Rods

A ceiling fan extension rod, also known as a downrod, is a metal rod used to lower a ceiling fan from the ceiling mount to the correct operating height. 

The extension rod connects the fan motor housing to the ceiling canopy, allowing the fan to sit at an optimal distance from the ceiling. This improves airflow, performance, and comfort—particularly in rooms with higher ceilings. 

Extension rods are available in different lengths and finishes to suit various ceiling heights and interior styles. 

Whether you need a ceiling fan extension rod depends on several factors. 

Step 1: Check your ceiling height 

Most Australian homes have a standard ceiling height of 2400mm. Australian guidelines require a minimum clearance of 2100mm from the floor to the lowest point of the fan blades. 

If your ceiling height exceeds 2400mm, an extension rod is often recommended to ensure effective airflow. 

Step 2: Check the total height of the ceiling fan 

Always review the total installed height of the ceiling fan you are considering. This includes the distance from the top of the canopy to the lowest blade point. 

Some fans have larger motor housings and may already sit lower than others. 

Step 3: Consider ceiling pitch or angle 

If your ceiling is angled or raked, installing a fan flush to the ceiling may cause clearance issues. A downrod allows the fan to hang vertically and safely away from the slope. 

Always ensure the fan canopy is designed to support angled installations. 

Step 4: Calculate available clearance 

Once you know your ceiling height and fan height, calculate how much space is available. 

Example: 

Ceiling height: 2800mm 

Fan height: 300mm 

Minimum blade height: 2100mm 

This leaves 400mm of available space, making an extension rod a practical solution to lower the fan into the optimal airflow zone. 

Yes. Most extension rods are supplied in longer standard lengths, commonly 900mm or 1800mm, and can be cut down by a licensed electrician to suit your ceiling height.

• Choose an extension rod compatible with your fan brand 
• Match the finish to your ceiling fan for a clean appearance

Installing a ceiling fan extension rod on a sloped ceiling requires a sloped ceiling fan kit, which replaces the standard canopy and mounting hardware.
