Lights Flickering? Try This
Flickering lights can be frustrating and distracting, especially when they ruin the ambience of a room. While LED lights and downlights are often blamed, flickering is rarely caused by LED technology itself. In fact, quality LED lighting is typically more stable, energy-efficient and longer-lasting than traditional halogen lighting.
So why does flickering happen — and how can you fix it?
Why Do Lights Flicker?
LED lights gained an early reputation for flickering due to cheap or poorly matched drivers and dimmers used in early installations. Modern LED lighting, when paired with the correct components, delivers consistent and reliable performance.
Most flickering issues today are caused by installation or compatibility problems rather than the light fitting itself.
How to Fix Flickering Lights
1. Loose Bulb Fittings
This is the most common cause of flickering lights — and fortunately, the easiest to fix.
Turn the power off at the switch, then carefully remove the bulb and check that the contacts are clean and free from corrosion. Reinsert the bulb firmly so it sits securely in the socket. If the bulb still flickers, the issue may lie elsewhere.
2. Dimmers & Compatibility
Dimmers are a great way to control lighting ambience, but incorrect dimmer selection is a leading cause of flickering LED lights.
When using a dimmer, always ensure:
- The bulb or light fitting is dimmable
- The dimmer is designed for LED lighting
There are two common dimmer types:
- Leading edge dimmers – best suited to halogen or incandescent lighting
- Trailing edge dimmers – recommended for LED lights
Using the wrong dimmer can cause flickering, buzzing, or lights that cut out entirely.
It’s also important to check wattage limits. A dimmer should be rated well above the combined wattage of the connected lights. As a general rule, avoid loading a dimmer beyond 75% of its maximum capacity to ensure stable performance.
3. Faulty Wiring
Although less common, flickering can be caused by loose or faulty wiring. This may be as minor as an unsecured terminal or as serious as an issue within the switchboard.
⚠️ Do not attempt to diagnose wiring issues yourself.
Electrical faults are dangerous and should always be inspected and repaired by a licensed electrician.
4. Faulty Light Fittings
Occasionally, even the correct fitting may develop a fault. While uncommon, manufacturing defects can happen.
