With Summer approaching in Australia, it's time to start dusting off our ceiling fans and getting them ready to go when the warmer weather is in full force. We're going to cover the easiest way to clean your ceiling fans - all with household items that you probably already have around the house!
Regular maintenance of ceiling fans is essential to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Dust accumulation on fan blades can reduce airflow and even impact indoor air quality. Dust mites, which thrive in built-up dust, are known contributors to respiratory issues such as asthma and sinus irritation. Cleaning your ceiling fan regularly helps maintain a comfortable and healthy living environment.
What You'll Need
- An old pillowcase
- A mild multipurpose cleaner
- A microfibre cleaning cloth
- A ladder
- A cap
- Optional: a face mask and gloves

Step 1:
Make sure the ceiling fan is switched off for safety. Put on your cap, gloves, or face mask to cover your face and hands from any dust that may fall off from the ceiling fan. Position your ladder accordingly.
Step 2:
Spray the mild cleaner on the inside of your pillowcase. Alternatively, you can dampen the pillowcase with warm water.
Step 3:
Slide the pillowcase over the fan blade so that it covers the entire blade. Carefully pull the pillowcase back out to trap all the dust on the top and bottom of the blades. This action should remove most, if not all, of the dust on the surface of the blades.
Step 4:
Use a cleaning cloth to wipe the residual grime and dust off the ceiling fan blades and motor housing.

And that's it! This only takes a few minutes to do the entire fan and will stop the dust particles from falling everywhere. Enjoy this ceiling fan cleaning hack and enjoy a dust-free ceiling fan experience in the warmer months.
