Your Ultimate Outdoor Heating Guide!

It's that time of year, the sun is disappearing earlier in the day, it's harder to get out of bed, and there's always that one guy who says 'it's not that cold!'. But it is... And if you've been having a read of our weekly blogs lately, you will have seen our posts on how you can use your ceiling fan in the winter to regulate and warm the air, as well as our guide to bathroom heaters! Today we're going to be talking about our favourite outdoor heaters from Heatstrip, and everything you need to know when you're on the hunt for the perfect outdoor heating system for your alfresco!

Why choose Heatstrip for your outdoor area?

Many conventional patio heaters rely on convection heating which works by heating the surrounding air to provide comfort. This can be quite impractical for outdoor and open-indoor areas as there is typically constant air movement which can easily blow away the warmed air. Radiant style heaters transfer heat directly to objects through infra-red waves. While convection heaters heat the air between objects, radiant heaters directly heat the surface of the objects themselves. HEATSTRIP® electric radiant heaters are more effective within an outdoor or uninsulated indoor area because they provide targeted warmth directly to the people and objects in their path.

Using the radiant heating principle, HEATSTRIP® can provide effective and energy efficient comfort heating for undercover outdoor and indoor open areas. HEATSTRIP® has successfully enabled many entertainment venues such as restaurants, pubs and clubs to utilise their outdoor dining areas day and night, through all seasons. Within your workplace or business, HEATSTRIP® can provide comfort heating for designated outdoor smoking and leisure areas, as well as for workstation spot heating in factories, warehouses and showrooms. Within your home, HEATSTRIP® can provide comfort heating for undercover alfresco dining and BBQ area, patios, verandas, courtyards and balconies.

How to choose the right Heatstrip?

There are 5 different ranges within the electric HEATSTRIP® product category. Each has a different temperature rating making them suited to a variety of applications. Below is a list of some common applications, to assist with the selection of the most effective and efficient series.

Classic & Elegance is a premium high temperature heater and is primarily used for protected outdoor areas with an ideal mounting height of 2.3m to 2.5m and maximum mounting height of 2.7m.

Max is an ultra high temperature heater used for uncovered or open indoor or outdoor areas with an ideal mounting height of 2.3m to 2.7m, and up to a maximum 3.5m for protected indoor applications.

Intense is an instant high temperature heater perfect for any exposed outdoor or indoor areas with an ideal mounting height of 2.3 to 2.8m, and a maximum 3m in an outdoor exposed application.

Nano is a good entry-level spot heating solution that can either be mounted or placed on a stand (sold separately). It has an ideal mounting height of 2.1m to 2.3m, and a maximum mounting height of 2.7m.

Once you have decided on the range, the next important consideration is the size of the heater. Each range generally has a few sizes to choose from, ranging from 1800W all the way to 3600W. For the majority of outdoor applications, the most effective way to decide this is based on your table or lounge layout. Information about table layout can be found on each product page.

Aesthetics: The Classic & Elegance range is by far the most popular option for residential homes. The stylish, slimline design of the Classic & Elegance range do not emit light or glow when in use, blending elegantly into your decor.

Intensity: The Max and Intense range with exposed elements will provide a greater intensity of heat. These heaters are ideally mounted higher, and the heat reaches further. On the other hand, the Classic & Elegance range have a milder heat intensity ideal for most residential homes.

Climate: If you're living in states with a warmer climate such as Queensland, the Classic & Elegance range will provide sufficient heating.

Heater Placement

The best way to go about planning your heater location is to think about where the people are going to be within that space. By placing a strip heater above a table or a seating area, you are spot targeting. Spot targeting the heat to areas most convenient and most commonly populated ensures your heating system is working smarter, not harder. You also want to make sure that the mounting height of the heater is correct! If you are having issues in working out where you should place a heater, ask your electrician, or call us if you are working with a DIY installation heater.

Accessories

Mounting brackets

A lot of strip heaters come with brackets for installation on the wall or ceiling, but it's important to check the model before assuming. There are plenty of other ways to mount your heater and the most common alternative to wall and ceiling traditional mounting, is angle mounting! Angle mounting means you can mount it on the wall or ceiling, and angle the heater downward, rather than it running parallel to the ground (if on the wall) or wall (if on the ceiling). The flush mount kit is suitable for a range of heaters from Heatstrip. This is suitable for plaster or wood ceilings and has a black zinc powder coast casting and a 316 stainless steel fascia!

Remote Controls and Timers

Hardwired heaters can be paired with a remote control and timer duo. This will let you control your heater with on/off functions, heat settings (high, medium, low), and hourly timer intervals. You can use this to control single or multiple heaters which is great for larger spaces that require more than one unit. Keep in mind that this will need to be installed by a licensed electrician and is not DIY. This remote control kit can be used for the Elegance range and the Max heaters.

Flush Mounting Kits

Heatstrip has a gorgeous range of heaters, but if you are wanting to reduce the look of clutter in your space, a great option for keeping things minimal is installing your heater into the ceiling. The flush mount kit is suitable for a range of heaters from Heatstrip. This is suitable for plaster or wood ceilings and has a black zinc powder coast casting and a 316 stainless steel fascia!

Remember: Electrical wires including the flex and plug should never run behind the heater. Always ensure they run to a connection beside the heater and out of the physical footprint of the unit. Never use a heater in a small room when occupied by someone who cannot leave the room on their own, unless supervised by someone who can assist.
