How to Warm Up with a Fan this Winter!

Why would you use a fan, something that traditionally cools you down in warmer months, in winter? Today we're going to talk about why modern fans have a Summer and Winter function and how it works! What's even more exciting, is that using the winter function on your fan can help you save money! If you have questions beyond this article, feel free to use the live chat function below, pop into one of our superstores, or give us a call! Let's get started!

How does it work?

The Winter/Summer option should be one of the key functions to search for when choosing a new ceiling fan for a new or existing build. In most cases, this is stated in the specifications on our listings under 'reversible function' or 'Summer/Winter. Most fans with this function will have a switch on the motor, or for some DC fans, the switch may be found on the remote control. You do not need an electrician to change between the Summer or Winter modes.

To understand how this function works, it is important to remember one key factor: hot air always rises! It will sit closer to the ceiling, while cold air will usually be lower to the ground. When you switch your ceiling fan from Summer to Winter, the direction of the fan will change from counter-clockwise to clockwise. When the fan is in Summer mode and turning counter-clockwise, it is pushing the cold air down and circulating the air. However, when your fan is in Winter mode, it is pushing the cold air up, and blending with the hot air to create a stable and therefore warmer temperature, while pushing that warmer air down. Here is a great example of how that works:

The ultimate combination!

Believe it or not, there is a sweet spot. In the colder months, having your winter function by itself is helpful, but pairing it with a heater can help circulate more air that is already heated. So instead of simply having a heater on and heating the parts of the house closest to the heater, using a heater and fan duo means the heated air from below and the warmer air closer to the ceiling are circulating. This means the hot air is regulated evenly throughout the space!

You save on costs...

By reducing the amount of time you are using your heater, and utilising your winter function on your fan, you save on electricity bills! In addition to this, you also do not need to operate the fan at full speed capacity. A simple low-speed function is enough to get the air circulating and regulating those temperatures.

Our top picks for Summer/Winter functionality:

Coming in at number one is the Fanforce Hawk II and the Fanforce Falcon II. Eglo Noosa fans have an extensive range of sizes, designed so that you can have a Noosa fit every sized room. These fans range from 40", 46", 52", and 60"; meaning you can have the same design in the baby's room, your kids' room, main bedrooms, large outdoor areas, and entertainment areas! For the larger side of the range, the colour options open up to gorgeous ABS timber colours as well.

4. Brilliant Mercury:

The Brilliant Mercury is great for anyone looking for a timber blade rather than an ABS blade. This fan comes in satin nickel and oil-rubbed bronze colour variations, as well as a smart and non-smart version. The Summer/Winter functionality on this fan is located on the motor!
